Prophet Muhammad SAW Said: Prophet Muhammad SAW Said:
Whoever is not kind to the younger ones,or does not
respect the elders is not from my nation.(Bihar Al Anwar,V72,P,137) |
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:
The Prophet said: "Those who show no mercy to our youth and do not realize the right of our elders are not of us" (Sunan Abu Dawud).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advises here the young people of Muslim society, who will be the elders of tomorrow, to honor the elders. The continued application of this Prophetic counsel helps bridge the gap between generations and extends an atmosphere of love and understanding between the young and the old. Consider here also the generalization in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If a young man honors an elder," the hadith should honor the elders no matter their color or religion. These are just examples of the goodness, mercy and respect of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) towards the elders.
These examples, and many others, translate the sublime Islamic code of ethics to treat the elders and provide Muslims, generation after generation, with a practical model to follow. This attention to the elderly is in keeping with the Islamic principle of the dignity of the human being and with the spirit of solidarity and mercy that pervades Muslim society.
